Body mass index or BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. It also takes your age into consideration.
Although your BMI does not actually “measure” your percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on your height. Due to its ease of measurement and calculation, it is the most widely used diagnostic indicator to identify a person’s optimal weight depending on his height. Your BMI “number” will inform you if you are underweight, of normal weight, overweight, or obese. But there is a wide variety of body types, the distribution of muscle and bone mass, etc. Due to this, it is not appropriate to use this as the only or final indication for diagnosis.
You can easily calculate your BMI using the calculator provided below. To calculate your Body Mass Index
(1). Enter your weight and height using standard or metric measures.
(2). Click “Are you Overweight” button and your BMI will appear below.
Note:Use the “metric units” tab if you are more comfortable with the international standard metric units.
The results will let you know in which range you fall or refer the picture below. Ideally you should be under Normal weight category.
